Did You Know!
That almost all foods are of plant or animal origin. However water and salt are important parts of the human diet. Salt is often eaten as a flavoring or preservative.

Other foods not from animal or plant sources include various edible fungi, such as mushrooms.

A Bit of History
The earliest known recipes date from approximately 1600 BC and comes from an Akkadian tablet from southern Babylonia.

Transporting Food
Hundred of years ago, some foods were delivered straight from the farm to people's homes often by horse drawn barges along canals, unlike today.

Also just imagine not having a fridge or freezer (or both), people usually went shopping every day because of this reason. However lots of shops offered to deliver food to peoples homes, often by a delivery boy with his bike. How things have changed...

Lets talk about TOMATOES....
TomatoesTomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C.
They are also very tasty.
Most importantly, studies do show that tomatoes and tomato-based products may help to prevent cancer.

Tomatoes taste best at room temperature, so don’t keep them in the fridge. If your tomatoes are not quite ripe, leave them in a brown paper bag for a couple of days - ripe tomatoes will have a uniform dark red or orange colour, be slightly soft and have a good tomato smell.

SLOW ROASTING TOMATOES - HARD TO BEAT
If you have time to spare, homemade slow-roasted tomatoes are hard to beat. Simply cut your tomatoes in half, place them on a baking tray, drizzle them in olive oil and sprinkle on herbs, then stick them in the oven and roast at Gas 1, 140 C, fan 120 C for an hour or drop the temperature and lengthen the cooking time (anything up to 9 hours) for a more intense flavour.

How the Pros do it...
For easy ways to impress your friends, take some tips from the professionals. These quick tricks require hardly any effort, but will make your meal look extra appetising.

Use large white plates for restaurant-style presentation. Don't overload the plate and wipe away any spills on the rim. Keep food warm by heating the plates before serving.

Provide a basket of warm bread rolls on the table. The smell of the bread will also add to the ambience.

Garnish dishes, soups and salads with fresh herbs or croutons.
